What is Neurofibromatosis?

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body. There are three types of neurofibromatosis: NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis. Each type has different symptoms.

NF1 is the most common type of neurofibromatosis. It affects about 1 in every 3000 people. People with NF1 have tumors called neurofibromas. Neurofibromas can occur anywhere on the body, but they most commonly grow on the skin, brain, and spinal cord. People with NF1 may also have problems with their vision, hearing, and balance.

NF2 is much less common than NF1. It affects about 1 in every 25,000 people. People with NF2 have tumors called vestibular schwannomas. These tumors grow on the Schwann cells that surround the eighth cranial nerve. The eighth cranial nerve controls balance and hearing. People with NF2 often lose their hearing and experience balance problems.

Schwannomatosis is the rarest type of neurofibromatosis. It affects about 1 in every 40,000 people. People with schwannomatosis have tumors called schwannomas. These tumors grow on Schwann cells that wrap around nerve fibers. Schwannomatosis can cause pain, weakness, and numbness in the arms and legs.

How Can Medical Marijuana Help Treat NF Symptoms?

Medical marijuana has been shown to help reduce seizures in people with epilepsy. Some people with NF also have seizures, so marijuana could potentially help treat those symptoms. Marijuana also seems to reduce inflammation, which could help with the pain and tumors associated with NF.

Potential Side Effects of Using Medical Marijuana to Treat NF

The potential side effects of using medical marijuana to treat NF include:

  1. Fatigue
  2. Dizziness
  3. Nausea
  4. Vomiting
  5. Poor appetite

This is why it’s important that you speak to a doctor before using cannabis to treat NF.

Best Strains of Medical Marijuana for NF

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best strains of medical marijuana for treating neurofibromatosis symptoms will vary from person to person. However, some popular strains that are known to be effective for relieving various symptoms associated with NF include Durban Poison, Granddaddy Purple, Blue Dream and White Widow.
